Denard Robinson: A Profile of the Michigan Starting Quarterback

In the first two games of his 2010 college football season, Michigan starting quarterback Denard Robinson has been running circles around defenders, all with his shoes untied. Robinson has been flying around the gridiron with his Adidas shoes untied since he played pee-wee football. This has earned him the nickname of "Shoelace." Throughout his career, his football and track coaches never bother to ask him to tie his shoes. The just let Denard run as fast as he can.

In high school Robinson started as varsity quarterback for three years. In one game against St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Robinson tossed five touchdown passes for 343 yards of passing yard. In his three year varsity career, Denard amassed nearly 6000 yards in total offense.

As a multi-talented athlete, Denard Robinson ran track in high school. He specialized in the 100 meter dash and the 400 meter relay. Denard Robinson possesses 4.3 speed in the 40 yard dash and is able to run 100 meters in 10.4 seconds. College football scouts were quick to notice Robinson's speed and he received scholarship offers from several Division I football programs.

Robinson entered the University of Michigan's football program for the 2009 season as a freshman. He saw limited action as a freshman, but was able to play in a few games as a backup quarterback in four games. Robinson had a 45 percent completion average and a quarterback rating new 92. During the 2009 season he also averaged 5.1 yard per carry rushing, and registered one run at 43 yards, a sure sign of good things to come for the University of Michigan Football program for the 2010 season.

During pre-season Robinson won out as starting quarterback, and has shown the he is a good fit for Coach Rick Rodriguez's spread offense. Robinson's speed, quick feet, and moves closely resemble those of Pat White. White ran Rodriguez's spread offense in West Virginia, nearly carrying them to a national championship game in 2007.

To start the 2010 college football season, Denard Robinson has put up some impressive statistics. The numbers are creating early talk about making him a possible Heisman Trophy candidate. His quarterback rating sits at a whopping 138.25, not far from a perfect rating. He has thrown for over 400 yards, and has also passed over 400 yards. Granted the opponents were Connecticut and Notre Dame, two teams on a downhill slide, but these are still decent numbers for any quarterback. Performance for the rest of the season will determine whether Denard makes it in as a Heisman candidate.
