Fashion is a volatile market where the competition is brutal and consumers are never wanting the same thing for long. These variables can create some crazy situations when it comes to the latest line of clothing. Today let us take a look at denim jeans.
Blue jeans have been around since 1873 and are still a staple item of clothing for any wardrobe. With denim pants being so commonly purchased and used, one has to wonder why people willingly pay outrageous prices for them. A recent article focused on a relatively new brand of jeans which offer vintage denim jeans. Their products are high quality and artistic, offering a familiar stonewashed look that is fit to be called heritage. The prices however, ranging from $225 to $375, are rather rough on the pocketbook. Granted, these jeans are developed from original custom designs and therefore warrant a bit higher price range, but even $225 for a single pair of pants does not seem realistic for the average family in today's current economy. For that same amount of money a family of four could buy a month's worth of groceries!
Although many savvier shoppers tend to stay away from department stores, Kohl's is known to be one of those where you can often find good deals. Not only do they carry designer labels such as Levi's, but they offer them at reduced prices. For example, a $48 pair of jeans may be on sale for 50% off which means you only pay $24. While these may not be Wal-Mart prices, they are considerably less than many other department stores. The only quirky thing about this whole deal is the designer labels themselves. As it turns out, many of the denim jeans currently on the shelf have some strange ideas of what consumers expect out of their pants. One brand had fake pockets and a fake zipper. Literally pockets that looked like they were there but were simply decorative stitching and where there is normally a zipper, it was also stitched closed. Yes, these were low-rise skinny jeans and probably didn't need a zipper but seriously, no pockets? Another had 4 big buttons in place of a zipper. Very hard to open and close, these buttons were more of a hindrance than help.
Skinny jeans in of themselves bring about their own craziness. BYU was recently in the media's eye due to an unfortunate incident with a young woman wearing skinny denim jeans being refused entry into the testing center. She arrived at the university testing center prepared to take a test and but was turned away because her pants were too tight. Following the media hype that ensued, the university itself has spread the word that skinny jeans are not forbidden but the testing center is allowed to post a sign which urges people to "go to the Lord 'and ask in faith, nothing wavering' for approval of the clothing you wear. The Spirit will tell you whether what you are wearing is appropriate or not."
So denim jeans are creating some craziness in people, in business, and in life. Who says fashion is boring?

Post a CommentVery interesting. And who in their right mind would pay $225 to $375 for a pair of jeans? That's plain nuts! :)
The testing center is obviously run by a bunch of control freaks. We should be able to wear our jeans as we like.
I love my jeans. Good article
Well written article nice job Laura Everly
The model in the image has no butt. :D
Skinny jeans make me want to cry. I know I'll never in my life ever fit into them, but honestly, the people who do sport them don't look kinda silly. After going through several Wal-Mart jeans quickly because of poor quality, I decided to buy name brand jeans only when they are on sale. I may pay an extra few bucks, but the longevity is worth it.
well written - thank you
