Hollywood legend Dennis Hopper (aged 73) is battling prostate cancer. This has caused him to cancel a trip to Melbourne, Australia where he was to oversee the installation of an exhibition titled "Dennis Hopper and the New Hollywood" at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI).

Hopper has stated he is disappointed his trip has had to be canceled, but that he needs to focus on his treatment and recovery.

ACMI director Tony Sweeney announced that the show will go on and that all concerned have sent their best wishes to Dennis Hopper for a very speedy recovery.

During his scheduled Australian visit, Hopper was to participate in a Q&A evening with Australian film critic David Stratton. This event has been canceled and refunds will be offered to ticket holders.

The exhibition which opens on 12 November 2009 and runs through to 25 April 2010, will showcase Hopper's body of work, his collaborations and personal art collection. It will also provide an insight into a formative era of Hollywood.

Hopper is an icon of rebellious times, lovers of liberty, and strong personalities comfortable with who they are. Australia wanted to share that no doubt, and is understandably disappointed in the canceled visit.

I am so sorry to hear about his condition, he is a very talented man both in front of and behind the camera. Great reporting.
