Denver Family Staycation - Planning Off the Beaten Path

Jaipi Sixbear
Planning a Denver staycation for your family? Remember why you chose to live in Denver. Why don't you ever seem to have time to take advantage of that? Why not use your family staycation to explore Denver like the tourists do? Being a tourist in your own town allows you to see the sights you never get to. Here's some unusual, off the beaten path tourist attractions in and around Denver.

The Western Museum of Mining and Industry- Pay a visit to this Colorado Springs attraction during your family staycation. See what brought settlers to the west in droves. There's gold in these here hills and silver too. Kids and adults can pan for gold. Little boys will love the real live working steam engines and more. Old time western music and pack burros are among the attractions.

Santa's Workshop - The Pikes Peak area is a great place for a family staycation day trip. One reason is taking the kids to see Santa. Visiting Santa's summer home away from home is every child's dream come true. There are amusement park rides, gift shops, magic shows, and of course, visits with the jolly old elf himself.

Skyventure Colorado - What's that all about? It's safe indoor skydiving. Not into jumping out of planes with your children? How about riding jets of air in a wind tunnel at the Park Meadows mall? This is a great way to see if you might like sky-diving, without all the risk. Don't worry, each guest gets a training session along with their "dive." This family staycation option is pricey but well worth the experience.

The Wild Animal Sanctuary - Forget the usual trip to the zoo. Did you know there's a wild animal sanctuary just 30 minutes outside of Denver? I'm planning a staycation trip there with the grandchildren this summer. Rescued animals start by being housed in the main compound and are moved gradually to large outdoor areas where they can roam freely, as in their natural surroundings. Families can view the animals at all stages of the process.

Lollipop Park Indoor Children's Amusement Park - This venue is opening in June of 2011. Parents can join paying kids for free amusement park rides. Indoor and outdoor mini-golf, refreshments, two Olympic-sized ice rinks and laser tag are just a few of the other attractions. Lollipop Park will offer birthday parties too!
