United States of America
When I was told about the event, I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was excited to express my views and hear what other people were saying. I had been to the Yahoo! News Ask America website before. In fact, as I joked with with one of the Yahoo!s manning the booth, I've become quite addicted to voting in their polls and stating my thoughts. But this would be my first time experiencing the van tour.
The question of the day (for staffers and other attendees) was "Who do you think will win big in the elections: Democrats, Republicans, or Tea Party?" By mid-afternoon, the Democrats had the majority vote on that one. The Tea Party looked a little lonely with just one vote. Only time will tell who will come out on top come Election Day.
With t-shirts proclaiming "Freedom. Liberty. Apple Pie," the Yahoo! News staff was eager to get people involved in expressing their thoughts on issues of all kinds. The computers set up at the van's kiosk were equipped with web access to the Yahoo! News Ask America site, where people could get their votes in about local Colorado issues, as well as national issues.
Anyone who answered the question of the day received a button, denoting their action of voting. There was also a nifty bumper sticker telling people to "Learn. Listen. Be Heard", which my laptop computer is now proudly displaying.
Even though I have visited the site many times, I couldn't help but play around with it some more during the event. The format is very user-friendly and the questions are easy to understand. It feels great to get those important thoughts out there. It's also great practice for the upcoming elections because it really makes you think about what you stand for on a deeper level - at least that's my experience.
The Yahoo! News Ask America Van has been going on tour around America, in the same spirit as their web mission, getting people more involved in the issues and the voting process. AC is one of the various Yahoo! web properties and helps readers become more informed through the advocacy of independent journalists.
