Denver Sports Bars and Grills

Enjoy March Madness at These Colorado Sports Bars

Kelli Perez
Get ready for March Madness! What teams will make it to the National Championship game? Where are you going to watch the NCAA Tourney? In Denver, there are three sports bars I recommend where you can watch the basketball games or any big sporting event for that matter. These sports bars offer a variety of drafts and brews that will quench your thirst.

Sports Column
1930 Blake Street
Denver, CO 80202
303-296-1930

Anybody from Iowa City, Iowa and living in Denver, Colorado will probably be familiar with the Sports Column bar. The owners of the Sports Column are Iowa residents who moved to Denver bringing a bit of the mid-west with them. Hawkeye and Cyclone fans can catch their team at the Column and meet other Iowa fans that have migrated out West.

The Sports Column has a college bar atmosphere. There is a DJ blasting music, a dance floor, pool tables and filled with a twenty-something crowd. There are numerous televisions throughout the bar where you can catch the game while you enjoy a variety of microbrews and domestic beers. They have favorites, such as, PBR, Budweiser and Miller beer. Microbrew lovers can indulge in Schillings, Fat Tire, Guinness and the selection is vast.

You can get the usual burger and fries at the Sports Column. They have the usual bar and grill favorites, such as hot wings, nachos, and salads. The one menu item they offer that no other sports bar offers in Denver is the tenderloin sandwich. This is a breaded pork patty that is fried to perfection and served on a hamburger bun with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and onions. It's a sandwich one should try if they have never had a breaded, fried tenderloin patty. The sandwich is a Mid-west favorite and quite tasty for $8.49.

Visit the Sports Column website to checkout their nightly specials. Happy Hour is from 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m Monday-Friday. Saturdays and Sundays they offer build your own Bloody Mary bar until 2 p.m. Bottomless Mimosas are available on Sundays until 2 p.m.

Blake Street Tavern
2301 Blake Street
Denver, CO
303-675-0505

This large sports bar is located two blocks from Coors Field. You can walk to the Blake Street Tavern after a Rockies baseball game. However, if you are coming from a Nuggets basketball game, you will have to drive from the Pepsi Center located several blocks away. Luckily, Blake Street Tavern has 100 FREE parking spaces after 5:30 p.m. and on the weekends.

When you walk into Blake Street Tavern you will notice how spacious it is. They have a dance club downstairs that is open on Fridays, a meeting room located near the back of the bar and off to the side by the restrooms is another large dining area. There are pool tables and numerous televisions to catch the game with four flat screens lined up side-by-side at the bar.

You can enjoy a meal while watching the game since their kitchen is open until midnight daily. Burgers and sandwiches are your choices. They have nightly specials, such as prime rib and chicken pasta. Their food is fresh and tasty. I had a buffalo burger, fries and side salad. The buffalo burger was cooked to perfection and the salad was not a plate of shriveled iceburg lettuce. It was a mix of greens with cucumbers, carrots, and tomatoes, which were all very fresh produce.

The usual domestic beers are offered. Blake Street Tavern, also, has several different Flying Dog microbrews to choose from. If you like a smooth tasting beer, the Flying Dog amber ale has a nice taste that is not bitter and goes great with the burgers. For all the menu choices, visit the Blake Street Tavern website.

Sloan's Bar & Grill
5850 W 25th Ave.
Edgewater, CO
303-274-4244

If you want to watch the game and not travel to downtown Denver, Sloan's Bar & Grill is located on the West side of Denver and tucked away in the small city of Edgewater. It's a favorite among the local Edgewater residents where nightly specials are available and offers a dining atmosphere without the bar crowd.

Sloan's Bar & Grill have a variety of beers, wines and drinks with their full bar. But if you are a family, who wants to go out for a meal, while dad enjoys the game, Sloan's Bar & Grill is a great place to have dinner, drinks and watch the NCAA Tournament. Nightly dinner specials range from ribs, T-bones, prime rib, lasagna and fish and chips. Other menu items are burgers, sandwiches, and salads. They have a kids menu with mac & cheese, chicken sticks, corn dogs and more.

There are several flat screen TVs around the dining area with a pool table in the back. If the weather is nice, you can sit outside in the patio area. You can even bring your dog and tie them to the fence surrounding the patio. However, you can't watch the game sitting out on the patio. Parking is free and there are many places to park off-street.

The atmosphere at Sloan's Bar & Grill is more a restaurant than a bar. You can go enjoy the game without it being noisy and packed with college students. After you have enjoyed your meal, you can relax with your drinks and watch the game without being hustled out.
