Denver's Famous Impulse Theater

Elise Clark
The improvisational comedy troupe located in the Impulse Theatre at the heart of Denver has been cracking up audiences for years. Their hands-on, interactive shows delight all ages every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night underneath Wynkoop Brewing Company. Located near two major bus depots, getting there is easy for anyone with a bus pass and some free time. This is often the best way to get into town as parking spots are hard to come by and driving into Old Town Denver isn't recommended. Taking a bus allows patrons of the Impulse to enjoy all the sights and sounds surrounding the theatre which certainly doesn't disappoint in terms of entertainment.

With packed houses since 1987 and over 5,000 shows, patrons will want to reserve tickets in advance due to the regulars that come back again and again. The sparse, comfortable theatre has rows of chairs and an open bar with unfortunately, a one drink minimum per person. However, with the friendly, informative, and helpful staff working the venue it's hard to be disappointed with the lack of booze or the smoke free atmosphere. The tickets are eighteen dollars per person on normal nights and on special ten dollar "Summer Nights" Impulse offers tickets half-off on certain days on the calendar for patrons with special attributes such as: mullets, organ donor cards, and special piercings.

Every first Sunday of the month the theatre opens its doors to all performers in a variety of artistic mediums such as stand-up, music, or regular theatre. The special night starts at seven, tickets are five dollars, and every person gets three drink tickets per entry for beer and snacks. This amateur night showcases first timers to the stage and mostly acts as a way to overcome stage fright. Sometimes there are artists who simply enjoy the limelight and comeback continuously for amateur nights, improving with practice. Mostly, this cheap entertainment offers laughs with, and at, the individual acts despite their varied abilities and practice. After the amateur show whose random talents can't be vouched for there are billiards to be played upstairs in the bar as well as a whole lot of socialization between performers and audience members.

The troupe at Impulse does a variety of other activates besides their improvisational shows. Anyone can reserve the theatre itself for a banquet, meeting, or arts related event by emailing them and getting a quoted price. The troupe also travels away from the theatre for private shows and practical jokes. People can hire any member or all the members of Impulse to help them with a practical joke for someone whether that be in-laws, co-workers, or boyfriend/girlfriend. Once emailed for a person's request they will hand tailor and work one-on-one to provide a unique, surprising, terrifying, and often hilarious practical joke with improved physical comedy. They've done everything from fake restaurant servers, to an ex-boyfriend seducing a woman's computer in front of her new in-laws.
