Denying Self Denial

( Stop the Cycle )

Can't... Won't... Shouldn't... Don't...
How many, many times have we heard
Our own inner voices repeat the refrain?

We long ponder this ridiculous imponderable
And wonder how we ever allowed ourselves
To permit our own self worth to whither so

To some our pasts are like anchors
Dragging deep in the sand at the sea bottom
Refusing to yield to forward motion

To others our pasts might be merely
Stepping stones or even spring boards
Propelling us into an all to uncertain future

We all have them and they are uniquely ours
Will they inevitably hold us back?
Will we escape their grasp and move forward?

Shrug off the cloud of confusion of self doubt
See past the fog of the countless days gone by
And behold the pristine perfection of who you are

Withhold back not the deserved self indulgences
And celebrate unselfishly the wonder of you
When you daringly and defiantly deny self-denial
