If you have depression, you may feel alone in your struggle. However, there are depression support and psychotherapy groups in the San Francisco Bay area you may attend if you are suffering from the symptoms of depression. Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, worthlessness, hopeless, inappropriate guilt, and/or helplessness, an increase or decrease in appetite, changes in sleep patterns, concentration difficulties, suicidal ideation, and difficulty making decisions. Peace It Together Teen Depression Group: The teen depression group offered by Peace It Together is for both teens and parents. Teens will have a chance to express their thoughts and feelings as well as to learn new ways of examining the negative thoughts and beliefs they possess. The group lasts for eight weeks and contains two sessions per week, one of which parents must attend. By attending the groups once a week, parents will better understand how their teens are feeling. They will also learn some strategies for helping their teens.

Living With Depression: Living With Depression is another depression group in San Francisco led by therapist Michael Korson, you may want to check out. This depression group is for adult men and women. In this depression support group, adults will learn about the different types of depression, identify and change negative thoughts and beliefs about oneself, learn new coping strategies, discuss relationships and practice interpersonal skills, and express feelings.

Coping Skills Group for Depression and Anxiety: The Coping Skills Group for Depression and Anxiety is a psychotherapy group facilitated by therapist Alex Theberge. The facilitator of the group utilizes cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and mindfulness to teach members how to effectively cope with depression, stress, and anxiety. While in the group, members learn emotion regulation, relaxation techniques, mindfulness, stress management skills, coping skills, and interpersonal skills.

It is important to note this group has a 12 week minimum commitment requirement. Each session costs $60 and some insurance companies may cover the cost. Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance: The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance offers a peer-support group in San Francisco for individuals suffering from mood disorders. The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) is a not-for-profit organization whose aim is to educate individuals suffering with mood disorders as well as their families and friends. Additionally, the organization aims to empower those with mood disorders, to eliminate stigma and discrimination against those with mental illnesses, and to improve the quality and availability of help.

DBSA offers regular support group meetings for individuals suffering from depression or bipolar disorder. Families and friends of those suffering with mood disorders are also welcome at these meetings. The organization also offers meetings specifically for families and friends as well.
