Depression and It's Causes

wendy van
Depression is an illness where a person feels very sad and hopeless for long periods of time. Many times the person will even feel suicidal. They feel that there is no reason to live. It is not completely known what causes depression but studies have speculated that chemicals in the brain change due to occurrences that happen in a person's life. These chemicals get out of balance and this causes the person to view life differently.

Studies have also shown that depression can run in families. This does not mean though that because one member of a family has depression that all members will get it. Sometimes people that have no depression in their family will end up getting depression. This is where the studies have helped to try to figure out what might cause depression.

How is Depression Treated

First of all it is important to be properly diagnosed by a doctor that deals with depression. The reason for this is that many medications can cause a person to become worse. It is important to be under a doctor's supervision while taking medications to make sure that the medications are being therapeutic and not harmful.

Once a person is diagnosed with depression a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist will prescribe an anti-depressant for the patient. The doctor will keep a close eye on the patient for the first month or so to make sure that the medication is helping the patient to improve. If the medication is not helping then the doctor will continue to either add or change medications as needed.

With proper medical attention a person suffering with depression has great hope. Medication can help a person to become completely well or the worse case scenario is that the person will have to continue to stay on medication. Either way, the person can go on to lead a full productive life.

If you or a loved one thinks that you are suffering from depression, don't wait. Contact your doctor and get treatment right away. You can be on your feet in no time. You don't have to live a life feeling sad or hopeless any longer.
