I've been depressed since I was eight-years-old, I'm 39 years old now. When I was depressed I would think about how bad things are and just expect them to get worse. A lot of the time I would think about suicide and how nice it would be to die and be done with everything having to do with life.

Functioning
Over the years, this kind of thinking hasn't gotten me anywhere and at times it makes it hard to function. I don't see how anyone can set goals if they're thinking about suicide. Planning for the future is an impossible thing to do when you're in such a state.

Problem-Solving
One of the worst things is problem-solving skill when you're depressed. You know that your depression is bad when every time a problem comes up, you want to kill yourself; and it doesn't matter how big or small the problem is. Everything is a crisis.

Medication And Counseling
With the help of medication and counseling I've found that there's a way that one can live a life with Depression. There are several different medications for depression and not a single one of them is a cure-all for everyone; so consult with your physician carefully.
Side-Effects
When it comes to depression, everyone is different. There are many different medications which are used to treat depression and all medications have side effects. I don't pay that much attention to the side effects; except dry-mouth. I think your physician should be able to tell you about the side effects for whatever medication that you're taking. Sometimes, the medication stops working for some reason and when this happens you can consult with your physician as to what the different options are, that are available to you.
The End Result
The reason for taking the medication is to help clear our thinking, so that we can make good decisions and function in society. With the proper counseling and the right treatment, we can all live much richer, happier lives.
