Depression: To Medicate or Not to Medicate?

Jade DeWitt
That is the question these days. Many people feel doctors are over prescribing medications. So what is the right decision? Truth is, there isn't one.

For many, therapy alone cannot help lift the veil of sadness that has taken over their life. They have been consumed by this depression for sometimes months or even years before seeking help. Medication can give you the kick start you need to overcoming this illness and for some it's simply a last resort. There are of course dangers with taking any medication. You should consult with your doctor about the potential side effects and if you may be at an increased risk.

Maybe medication just isn't for you. Whether it's for religious or personal beliefs or you just can't tolerate any of the side effects, there is still hope. Therapy has been helpful for millions of people. It allows you to get away from everyday life for an hour and just talk freely about everything. There are many different types of therapists as well as psychologists and psychiatrists. All of them are devoted to helping you discover what's going on inside and ways to get through this period of your life. Working together you can regain some control in your life and hopefully start to finally find the relief you've been seeking.

A lot of people who suffer from depression find themselves leaning towards the medication route simply out of convenience. While this certainly isn't the wrong way to go it's important to remember you do have other options. Sometimes a combination of therapy and medication may work best to get you feeling more like yourself.

The choice of whether or not to take medication is a personal one. There is no right or wrong answer. You have to do what is best for you. There are pro's and con's to each one. However there is one thing we can agree on. Don't try and fight this on your own. There are people out there who are ready and willing to help you through this difficult time. If you feel you might be suffering from depression, contact your family doctor for more information. He or she might also be able to refer you to a therapist if that is the direction you choose to go.
