Depression Myth: Depressed People Cry a Lot

Here are some of the common myths shared by many Montrealers

It is easy to spot depressed people; they cry a lot

Some depressed people do cry a lot and others do not cry at all. People have this notion that depressed people will be easy to spot because they are the people in the corner at a party with their head hanging low. They also could be the people who are the argumentative people at your work or the big mouths or people trying to make everyone happy. That is when they are still able to socialize.

Many times depressed people do not show any symptoms at all. They have what is clinically called flat affect. They don't feel anything. What would be a happy occasion for a person who is not depressed such as a graduation, new job, birthday, and so on no longer has any meaning for the depressed person.

Depression runs in families

Although there is evidence to support that there is a genetic factor involved in depression, it does not mean that you are doomed to becoming depressed. Depression can also be due to environmental factors. If you look out for early signs of depression, eat well, exercise, and get counselling for your life issues, you have a good chance of preventing depression in the first place. Learn how to cope with stress early on and you will be better prepared. However, should you become depressed get help immediately. Do not wait until it develops into a clinical depression.

Depression is a natural part of aging

No depression is not a natural part of aging. Many times depression is overlooked in the elderly because of this belief. New research is showing that more and more seniors are depressed. The reasons vary from poverty, to illness, loneliness, poor eating and sleeping patterns and so on.
