Here are some of the common myths shared by many Montrealers

Memory loss in older people is not due to depression but always due to dementia.

Though dementia is certainly a main concern for older people the fact remains that memory loss is also triggered by depression. Sometimes it is fine line between the two. Caregivers and ssome professions can confuse one disability with another. The key would be to get the treatment such as psychotherapy. This treatment will help if the memory loss is due to depression.

Talking about depression is not helpful

Though once it was believed that talking about your depression kept you in that thought pattern. Talking about depression with a professional is actually a good thing. Depressed people get to air what is on their soul; sometimes for the very first time. Many depressed people feel that talking about it to family members and friends is not a good thing. They don't want to be a burden or a partypooper. They don't may feel they really have nobody to talk to or nobody to understand them. A trained therapist is equipped to listen, to understand, to support to guide and to offer psychotherapy. The therapist will address, negative thoughts by offering a more positive thought scenario, they will help with suggestions for improving life style and relationship issues and offer suggestions for community resources to deal with life issues such as job training or low cost housing and food banks.

I totally agree with you about seeking a trained therapist! You are one of those rare persons who is not only educated but you have much common sense and heart too!! Sometimes talking about your problems with family might not help at all but it may even hurt due to the fact that they may be the cause! They end up telling you that you are wrong because they don't want to share the blame.
