Depression and Stress: Learning to Cope

The Hidden Monster

Heidi Adams
Depression comes in many shapes and sizes and does not discriminate between gender or race. Learning what can cause depression can be one effective tool in learning to deal with the illness. Most cases of depression are caused by a stessor on the body such as an unforseen illness, stress at work, stress at home, or small incidents that an individual cannot effectively deal with. Depression is also hereditary and has been proven most likely to be inherited with depressive disorders related to Bipolar-Manic Depressive disorder. Numerous studies show that the genetic makeup of the brain differs in individuals suffering from Bipolar Disorder and similair links can be found between two unrelated persons with the same disorder. Individuals not suffering from BP(Bipolar Disorder) do not show the same chemical makeup in the brain as those that do suffer from the disorder.

There is hope for individuals suffering from Depression and stress. Some treatments can include medication but may often be treated without medication through alternative methods. Some suggestions are provided below.

1. Exercise- If you are a healthy individual and can perform the basic functions of an exercise program this is my number one choice for overcoming depression. Some cases of depression can be linked to low self esteem related to body image. Not only can exercise be a mood enhancer because of the endorphins that are released during exercise, but the feeling of accomplishment after a workout is a great adrenaline rush.

2. Get creative- If you are feeling down write a poem, or a song, or just write in a journal. Sometimes people tend to hold things in instead of letting their emotions out.

3. Find a buddy- Find someone you can trust and talk to them. Maybe they can identify what you are going through. Talking is a very effective way to deal with depression. Sometimes just carrying a burden alone can be too much.

4. Take a walk- Go outdoors. Enjoy the scenery. Find the beauty in what surrounds you. Run if you feel like it. You might be surprised how fresh air can be exhilarating.

5. Sun therapy- Sun therapy, if done correctly, can be a great mood enhancer. The sun provides your body with Vitamin D, which has been linked to mood enhancement and overall wellness. Just don't over do it.

6. Paint- This can be very theraputic. It also gives you a chance to be expressive and to let your emotions out.

7.Music- Find music that will take you to a happy place, or if you need to listen to some sad music or angry music. Just let it out! Sing, shout or cry. You will feel a sense of healing when you are done.

8. Go to a bookstore- Get lost in their! If you can find a book and sit quietly do so. Change your environment for awhile. Sometimes changing your surroundings can help relieve stress and promote a little relaxation.

9. Do something adventurous- Plan a temporary escape. Do something you are afraid of doing. Choose something like rock climbing or parachuting. I do advise only healthy individuals try this. Ask your doctor if you are able to participate in these activities if you are unsure.

10.Take time for you- Above all this is the most important! Sometimes we feel stressed and lost because our daily lives require so much from us. We are constantly giving of ourselves and can feel overwhelmed. It is important to do something for you. Whether it is a half hour a day or an hour a week. Just do something for you. It could be a dance class, or golf, or a movie. Just take time to be you.
