Derby and the Rose

Jessica Favata
He'd been to the slaughterhouse one too many times

He sat at his white chrome desk; a dictionary detective looking for just the right words to say,

"But baby, a diamond is forever"

Hazel eyes and grey skies

And bicycle rides and lullabies

And apple pies

Had somehow become sad goodbyes.

He now came home to blown glass in a white tiger hallway

And calculated messes and housewife dresses

What's under that wide-brimmed hat that shields you from the sun

And from eye contact with your own demons?

An army of raindrop overcoats with hidden agendas

And white ghost branches against your window

His soft scream was muffled by memories

Of his patent schoolboy dream
