Derek Anderson was Released by the Cleveland Browns After They Traded for Seneca Wallace

Derek Anderson was released by the Cleveland Browns. Derek Anderson got released today, after the Cleveland Browns traded for Seneca Wallace from the Seattle Seahawks yesterday. The move to release quarterback Derek Anderson isn't a very shocking one, as Anderson had struggled a lot for the Browns last season. This not only clears up room for Seneca Wallace to get snaps, but for Brady Quinn to also get a chance at being the full time starting quarterback. The Cleveland Browns front office hasn't stated what they plan on doing with Wallace or Quinn at this point, but it is really looking like they will be competing for the job when the mini-camps get started this summer.

Derek Anderson was released after five years as a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, and during that time he had found enough success to even be a Pro Bowl selection. That was back in 2007 though, when Anderson threw for 3,787 passing yards and 29 touchdown passes. In 2009, the best way to describe how Anderson did on the field was to call it ugly. He only completed 45 percent of his passes (81 for 182), only threw for 888 total yards, and could only muster three touchdown passes to go with 10 interceptions. It was just flat out ugly, with one of his games resulting in only 23 passing yards for the full game. It gave back-up quarterback Brady Quinn the chance to show his stuff, but then Quinn failed to impress as well.

With the release of Derek Anderson, the Browns have finally taken that big step in a positive direction as a franchise. They first traded a 2011 NFL Draft pick to get Seneca Wallace from the Seattle Seahawks, and now they have cleared up a roster spot by releasing Anderson. This will be seen as a very good move by Cleveland Browns fans that have been waiting for big changes, and officially kicks off the tenure of Mike Holmgren in Cleveland. He has a tough task ahead of him with the re-building of this franchise, but so far he has made two big moves that could really benefit the Browns in 2010.
