Clean the wound bed with a saline solution. Gently dry the wound bed. Cut the Medihoney to fit inside the wound bed and cover with a dry sterile gauze. Change the dressing every four days. For excessive drainage, change the outer dressing, leaving the Medihoney in the wound bed. Do not shower or bathe with the wound dressing. Use a sponge bath instead. Remove the Medihoney dressing after the fourth day. Shower or bathe before applying the new dressing.
I was introduced to Medihoney and used it on a decubitus ulcer. I am a paraplegic who ended up with a decubitus ulcer on my buttocks. Sitting in a wheelchair for long periods of time broke the skin down, causing a deep ulcer to form. After only using Medihoney three times, there was a significant positive change in the ulcer. The depth of the ulcer was 2.5cm, but after three days of using Medihoney, it measured 2cm. An excessive amount of drainage caused me to change the dressing daily. It was after the fact that I realized I could have just changed the outer dressing, leaving the Medihoney in the wound bed for the four days.
I have used the KCI Wound Therapy VAC, and it has proven to heal at an alarming rate. For me, the Medihoney had better results. The dressing changes with the Medihoney are less complicated, and there is no odor or having to carry a machine around everywhere you go.
Without insurance, Medihoney can be very expensive. It is not available at any drug stores I have called, including CVS. Searching online, I have found Medihoney for sale with prices ranging from $50 to $176 for a box of 10 2x2 or 4x4. You can call your physician, who will have more information on prescribing Medihoney and where to purchase it.
