Dermarest Eczema: A Lotion Providing Much Needed Rest

Since 2001, my family has been on a mission to resolve the eczema crisis that has plagued our household. Our pediatricians have recommended and prescribed numerous eczema products including steroids for our children, but as the old adage goes: "Mother knows best!" My husband and I have 3 children, and each of our children has a unique experience with eczema--dry, itchy skin that can become inflamed. Our oldest son (born in 2001) has eczema that ranges from mild to moderate. Our youngest son (born in 2003) has eczema in few places like on that thumb that he sucks and in his arm and leg creases. Our infant daughter (born in August 2006) has eczema that is a definite cross between what her two big brothers experience. One day her eczema may be limited to her face; another day, her whole body may exhibit signs of the dry, itchy patches.

According to the pediatricians, the eczema is hereditary, but I beg to differ. Neither my husband nor I nor members of our families have had bouts with this skin ailment that resembles what our children have endured. Our oldest son has had the worst incidents by far. As an infant, he suffered from eczema along with cradle cap, and his scratching the eczema led to his skin being infected under his arm. The infection caused an abscess, and at 5 months old, he had to have outpatient surgery to cut and drain the abscess . . . all because of eczema, or to be exact, it was due to inflamed eczema. When my children's eczema is inflamed and nothing seems to be working, lots of sleep can be lost!

My family has no problem dealing with the characteristic dry skin that eczema causes. We have heard enough about: Eucerin, Aquaphor, Vaseline, Crisco (yes, Crisco), Shea butter, cocoa butter, etc. The flare-ups that accompany eczema are what we have had a very difficult time managing. The doctors have recommended and/or prescribed for children: Elidel (which has been linked to cancer), Protopic (which has been linked to cancer), Cortisone, etc., but these people who are supposed to have my children's best interest at hand have yet to mention Dermarest Eczema. I cannot understand why I have to bend over and grab my favored Dermarest from the back of the bottom shelf of my local CVS Pharmacy; I have not even been able to find this Dermarest Eczema at my local Target, Wal-Mart, Giant or Safeway, among other stores.

For more than a year, I have disposed of all prescription eczema medications, and I faithfully purchase Dermarest Eczema. Now that's a great deal for a family of 5, and it is worth every penny! We use it when the children's eczema flares for about a day or two, applying it at most 3 times for that day or two, and then the Dermarest Eczema goes back on the shelf until the next flare-up. (Note: The label for this product indicates that it should not be used for children under 2, but my pediatrician has approved the use of hydrocortisone for my daughter's case of eczema.) During the warm months, we apply Eucerin Plus Intensive Repair Lotion over the Dermarest. During the colder months, we have to coat the layer of Dermarest with Aquaphor.
