Dermatologist-Recommended Soaps for Your Skin Condition

If you feel lost when you walk through the skincare aisle of the drugstore, learn to pick which products are right for your particular skin condition. Ask a doctor to be sure that the soaps and face products you see at the drugstore are right for you and your skin type.

Eczema

Eczema is a skin condition that includes a number of rashes and redness that appears on the skin. These rashes are most often caused by an allergic reaction to something that the skin has been exposed to. In order to help soothe and treat the symptoms of eczema, the American Academy of Family Physicians suggests using a milder soap, such as Dove, Basis or Oil of Olay. The soap will work best when used with water that is cool or lukewarm, but not hot, and the
showering time is as short as possible.

Dry Skin

Dry skin, known as "xerosis" when it is mild to moderate and "ichthyosis" when it is severe, is a condition caused by lack of moisture in the skin. Usually, lack of moisture occurs when skin is exposed to cold temperatures or a dry environment, although it can also be caused by exposure to the sun or harsh detergents and soaps. The Mayo Clinic recommends using Neutrogena, Dove or Basis to help soothe dry skin, because these soaps contain fats and oils, which soothe the skin and help hold in moisture.

Acne-Prone Skin

Skin that is frequently affected by acne may require a medicated soap to help prevent breakouts and reduce oil. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are two active ingredients commonly found in over-the-counter acne medications. Products and soaps that contain these active ingredients will help exfoliate and remove dead skin cells while clearing away dirt and oil that causes acne.
