Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, Drug Arrest and the Iowa Football Team

Sherry Tomfeld
Iowa Hawkeye fans are waking up to the news that Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has been arrested on drug charges. Koulianos posted an $8,000.00 bond and was released Tuesday night. He has been suspended from playing football and will be facing arraignment sometime today. Derrell Johnson-Koulianos is a senior who hails from Ohio. To watch Koulianos run a play and catch a pass is awe inspiring. To read the news of Koulianos being arrested on drug related charges brings out two emotions in Hawk fans. Sadness to see such a talented player throw his future away and anger that he didn't think more of his school, his team, his family, his fans and himself.

Derrell Johnson-Koulianos has great stats and was expected to be called in the draft. To see his stats go here. Known to fans in Iowa as just Koulianos, he has been an outstanding player and at times a character. He was told NOT to talk to the media this year. He was kept from starting a couple of times. Couch Frerentz said he was highly disappointed to learn of the charges.

Koulianos was arrested on at least 7 charges. There are 4 counts of possession of controlled sustances, 2 counts of unlawful possession of prescription drugs and 1 count of running a drug house. Admitting to police that he had recently used cocaine and smoked marijuana the following drugs were also said to have been found in the Koulianos residence. Dilaudid, Diazepam, Hydroxygine Parnoate and Zolpidem Tartrate. The majority of these drugs are said to be used to treat pain, depression and anxiety.

The Iowa Hawks were thought to be a contender for the Big Ten Conference leader. But as the season progressed, the Iowa Hawkeyes slowly stumbled and fell. Reading comments on The Gazette.com, fans are wondering what's at the core of the Hawkeye football problem.

The Iowa Hawkeyes, who have shown that they a are well-oiled team, seemed to have lost their cohesiveness the latter part of the year. Why? If anyone knows, they aren't saying. Reading through the comments on the Gazette may or may not help fans figure it out.

The Iowa team will have to push through whatever their problems are as they head for the Insight Bowl. And Derrell Johnson-Koulianos will have to own his problems, pay for them and hopefully start a new life. Like commenter Donna Bogs said "If you can't be a good example-be a great warning."

Hey BillD.Bergers, if we were to make murder, rape, burglary, harassment, tax evasion, and DUI all legal, we'd see crime rates drop the next day too. What's your point? He was RUNNING A DRUG HOUSE! It's not like he was just caught with a small sack of weed. I'm not all like drugs are horrible arrest anyone who smokes pot, but again, HE WAS RUNNING A DRUG HOUSE!!! He's the big football player in a little town in Iowa. He was big sh*t. He (thought he) was untouchable. I would bet he had been caught with a small amount of drugs before and the officers told him to stop being stupid. That's only an educated guess. But my point is, the boy thought he was NFL gold, and now he'll probably just be Maurice Clarett... what a shame. Especially now that since he'll be missing out on that NFL money, what's he gonna do for a career? Sell drugs?

Outdated drug laws are ruining lives and our culture

Repeal all Drug Laws and make them all legal and you'll see crime drop the next day!
