Derrick Burts Admits He is HIV Positive Porn Star 'Patient Zeta'

Derrick Burts has come forward and admitted he is the porn star who was recently found to be HIV positive, an event which sent a shockwave through the lucrative Hollywood porn industry.

Burts identified himself to the Los Angeles Times and said in a statement yesterday that he "wishes he had known more about the risks of contracting sexually transmitted diseases in the industry." He also called for mandatory condom use in porn films.

Derrick Burts, 24, worked in both straight and gay porn films for a few months using the stage names "Cameron Reid" and "Derek Chambers." He believes he may have contracted the virus during a gay porn shoot in Florida.

Until now, Burts has only been known as Patient Zeta.

Burts formerly worked as a hotel manager and cruise ship magician before gaining employment in the porn industry. He went to the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, where porn stars are tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, regularly for HIV testing and was advised in October that he had contracted the disease. Previously in September his test had come back negative.

The Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation claimed last month that Patient Zeta must have contracted the disease through personnel activity and not on-set relations.

"That's completely false," Burts told the LA Times. "There is no possible way. The only person I had sex with in my personal life was my girlfriend."

Derrick Burts said he wants to use his HIV status and fame to push for more safeguards in the porno industry.

"Making $15,000 for porn isn't worth your life," he said. "Performers need to be educated."
