The first thing to think about in designing your garden-style home is the color. The best colors are light earth tones. Creams, browns, beige, light green, and baby-blues all work well for the scheme. Blue and greens go great with floral pattern. Another alternative is wall-paper with country or garden-themed pictures or flowers.
For seating, consider true outdoor seating such as Adirondack lawn chairs or garden benches. Hard-wood framed seats do quite well also. Another idea is to use wicker. Wicker is great because it can be painted to match the color scheme you desire. A sofa with floral prints or throw-overs can work in many instances.
Coffee and end tables should be thick-cut wood, or country-styled. Natural wood looks good, but you can also paint them and stencil garden designs around them and on the legs. A bench can also be easily converted into a coffee table.
For the windows, you could leave them bare. This will create the illusion that there is no separation from the outdoors. Other window treatments should be sparse and allow the maximum amount of light to shine through.
Electric lighting and lamps to consider are either wrought iron or glass designs. Shades should again be very simplistic to downplay their electric nature.
Other ideas include adding live plants or silk/plastic plants in pots and wicker baskets work well here too. If you have a fireplace it can be converted into a garden themed area in the summer. Add potted plants, perhaps some garden tools, and some greenery interspersed. Colored glass bottles can also be set out through the room.
On the walls, a country or garden-themed mural could do wonders in both adding to the theme and also creating space. Check with a local college or art school to find someone to paint your mural. Pastures, fields, garden paths, and winding roads will help to open up your living room.
As you can see, the ideas are endless for designing a garden-themed living room. Anything that you see in your outdoors garden can be incorporated in one way or another.
