Designer Dresses Like Natalie Portman's Department Store Dress Near Cocoa, Fl

Jane Vee
If an actress can wear her favorite designer's creation from a department store for $40, can't we all be a little more frugal? If Natalie Portman can be photographed at NY Times' Arts and Leisure Weekend wearing a $40 dress from Target, shouldn't people with lower wages be able to find clothing for the same amount or less and still feel good about themselves?

In a world for entertainers of fashion and "show", it is refreshing to see an actress like Natalie Portman showing frugality, while still wearing one of her favorite designers, Rodarte. She wore a Rodarte design to the Oscars last year. A regular Rodarte costs around $8,000. Natalie saved thousands of dollars by just shopping at Target.

Popular designers are known for originals that cost in the thousands of dollars. They are also known to have labels that are massed produced for specific stores. By designers putting their label on clothing that was massed produced, people that cannot afford a million dollar wardrobe can still purchase the brand name clothing at department stores for a fraction of the original's cost.

Natalie Portman advertised Rodarte by wearing a dress that was purchased at Target for $40. Though the dress is a little too frilly to wear for any occasion, the frugality from the purchase of this dress certainly makes it fashionable for a formal occasion in this economy.

Some other designers seen on the runway and in the department stores are Tommy Hilfiger, Dana Buchman, Mossimo. Most designers' looks that are seen on the runway can easily be replicated by mixing and matching non-brand names clothing. So as non-millionaires, the everyday folk have a chance of obtaining clothes that look like the supermodels' clothes in fashion week.

In order to obtain the name brand or original article of clothing, the purchase will be expensive unless you shop thrift stores in your area or the internet. The internet is a great resource to find the clothing you are looking for. Even department store prices may seem out of reach in this economy, so eBay or other auction sites may have discounted prices.

I think Natalie Portman is an amazing actress. Another good place to get slightly used (and greatly reduced) designer duds is from your local Junior League Shop or consignment boutique. All the local society ladies either give away or resell virtually brand new clothes with the changing seasons, and those of us without endless cash can pick them up much cheaper. I recently read an article where someone had a fundraiser in Evanston (first suburb north of Chicago...where I used to live) in which they had all their girlfriends bring an old designer handbag and they were all put up on eBay with the resulting sales money going to charity.
