Designer Shoe Warehouse: Great Shoes, Customer Incentives

Mark Murphy
Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) opened its doors in 1991 and currently has more than 250 retail outlets in the United States. The average store carries more than 30,000 pairs of shoes for men, women and children. They carry standard brands such as Reebok, Nike and Converse. They also sell some high-end names like Coach and Prada, making it a popular destination for any shoe shopper. DSW also has a "DSW Rewards" program that benefits even the casual shopper.

Each week, DSW stores around the country receive a new shipment of shoes. This means that you can find something new and different almost every time you go there. None of their stores has a stockroom, so shoppers will find countless aisles of shoe-boxes. Atop each of the neatly stacked boxes is a model of the shoes snuggled in the boxes underneath it. These aren't discontinued lines, irregulars, or out-of-season styles either. All of their merchandise is top quality and current-season. They also carry limited amounts of hard to find sizes.

Designer Shoe Warehouse sells shoes for 20 to 50 percent less than department stores. Merchandise is situated by style, not designer. This means you don't have to wade through countless pairs of heels to find a pair of sandals. The real bargains however, are at the back of the store. This is the clearance area where shoes are marked down a further 30 to 80 percent! A bargain hunter with a sharp eye can find shoes that regularly sell for $300 at the mall selling for around $40 at DSW.

While there are a great many shoes here for everyone, DSW is definitely geared more towards women than men. Nearly three-quarters of the store is devoted to women's shoes, but with 30 thousand pairs of shoes under one roof, that still leaves over 7,000 pairs of shoes for men to pick through. Considering that the average man has five pairs of shoes in his closet, it almost seems like overkill. With plenty of helpful staff members around, this store is a sure-fire hit for anyone looking for footwear.

With very few exceptions, every DSW is open seven days a week. DSW gift cards are easily available for purchase and they have a generous 30-day return policy. Returns after 30 days will receive in-store credit. Another great feature of DSW is its rewards program. Free to join, the program allows shoppers to accrue points towards discounts and certificates. Better information on the program can be found at the DSW web site. If you're looking for a pair of shoes, or a few dozen pairs of shoes, try stepping into your local DSW and see what they have to offer.
