Designing Custom Skins for Your Kindle 2 with Skinit.Com

Deborah Woehr
I learned about Skinit.com while surfing through the nookboards.com forum while I was waiting for my nook to arrive. Skinit.com is an online company that makes skins for a wide variety of gadgets, such as iPads, iPhones, laptops, Kindles, nooks and a whole lot more. You can also make custom skins for your car, truck, RV and the walls of your house or daycare center.

I chose Skinit.com over the other decal companies because I was able to create my own designs. The design process was very simple. I was able to upload and place my images without watching the tutorials on the Create Your Own page.

Designing Your Custom Skin

Skinit gives you the option of uploading images from your computer, photo sharing websites (photobucket, facebook, etc.), their stock image collection or a specified URL address.

Once you select or upload your image, you can drag it onto the template. From there you can resize, rotate or delete the image if you don't like it. A lot of the time, I have problems dragging the design onto the template when using my Firefox browser. Maybe it has something to do with java or flash. I'm not sure, but it works fine when I use Safari or Chrome.

After I have the image the way I want it, I click the Preview button to make sure that the image is placed so that there are no white edges showing on the template. Then I click the Add to Cart button.

Ordering Your Custom Skin

Ordering your customized skins is an easy process. Skinit.com takes credit card or PayPal. The delivery time usually takes between 7-10 business days. The price for a Kindle 2 template is $19, whether you use a custom design or one of Skinit's designs.

Quality of the Skinit.com Skin

I was very impressed with the vibrant colors of my design and the thickness of the skin material. My skin arrived in a tube, which was very easy to open.

Applying Your Skin

This takes some practice. First, make sure that you're device is clean. Then read the directions very carefully.

What a cool service! I don't have a Kindle yet, but this will be something to look into when I get one - thanks :)
