Designing a Flier Microsoft Publisher

Kathy Brewis
Microsoft Publisher XP is a software program used by many people to design such things as flyers, greeting cards, business cards and much more. Why would you want to create a flyer in Publisher? First, Microsoft Publisher XP offers a variety of templates which can be altered to convey your information. It can't get any easier that that. For those of you who are computer savvy and have a creative mind, you may choose to create a flyer from a blank piece of paper. Best of all, Microsoft Publisher XP is set up for all types of users...from those who know very little about computers to those who are very gifted at a computer. Another good reason to use Microsoft Publisher XP is that it is relatively cheaper than other similar software. Publisher is considered to be a lay persons software; meaning that it was designed so that almost anyone could design something if they so choose to. You do have other options but for the price and ease of use, you can't beat Microsoft Publisher XP.

Now that I have told you some great reasons to use Microsoft Publisher, let me know tell you how you can create a basic flyer from just using some of the basic templates that come with Microsoft Publisher. When you first decide that you need or want to create a flyer and that you are going to use Microsoft Publisher, the next step for you to take is to decide what template you will be using on Publisher.

First, you will need to open Microsoft Publisher. This entails double-clicking on the Microsoft Publisher icon on the desktop or by going to Start, Programs and then selecting Microsoft Publisher from the list of programs. In Publisher XP you will find on the left side of the screen a sidebar which is called a "task pane". This task pane allows you to do various functions within publisher. To create a new flyer you would simply look on the task pane and find the word "flyer" listed as one of the types of publications. When you click on "flyer' you will then be give a drop down selection in which you make your selection based on your needs. You can choose from the following: Informational, Special Offer, Sale, Event, Fund Raiser and Announcement.

Let's say that you are going to do a flyer for a bake sale. Obviously for this type of flyer you would choose, flyer. Well, that is not always true. If you are a savvy user, you may choose any layout under any category and change it so it meets your needs. You don't necessarily have to use a template that has already been designated for a certain type of publication.

As it turns out, there is a template called "bake sale". Well, to make it easier on everyone, including yourself, you can simply choose that particular layout "bake sale". It is important for me to mention that on Publisher you have what is called placeholders on your piece of paper. Without these placeholders, you would not be able to insert any information onto your paper. Each item that is included on your publication must have a placeholder. Basically what a placeholder does is just keeps a place available for your particular item such as text or an image. With the design and layout we chose, we can simply go to each placeholder and change the information that is already there for our information. If you plan on mailing these publications on to people, Microsoft Publisher has a wizard which automatically inserts your personal information such as mailing address and name onto the publication. After you have changed all placeholders to meet your specific needs, you are ready to print the flyers out. Remember that in order to have color flyers, you will have to have access to a color printer. If you don't have access to a color printer you may go to a local printer and for a fee they can print your flyer out in bulk.
