Create a Great Space for Any Musician

Designing a music room for your home can be a fun project for any musician. It is your chance to customize an area specifically dedicated to the music instrument of your choice. Ideally, you want a music room where you can display your musical instruments, jam with your friends, or put on a small show for a few guests. Here are a few tips on designing a great music room in your house or apartment.

Designing a music room: Choosing the room

Acoustics are the most important thing to consider when choosing which room of your house to decorate as a music room. If your instruments do not sound good when you play them in the room, you will not get much enjoyment out of your new music room. There are some modifications you can make to improve the acoustics of a room. Adding area rugs or wall tapestries can work well to reduce the reverb coming from the music room. You should also think about the temperature and humidity in the desired music room. Avoid any room that is particularly hot or damp as these conditions can damage your musical instruments.

Designing a music room: Displaying your instruments

Of course, the focus of any great music room should be the musical instruments themselves. Whether it is a large grand piano or an electric guitar, you want to design your music room so that the visitor's eye is drawn toward the instrument. If you have a large collection of musical instruments to display, it may be better to hang them on the wall rather than purchase a stand for each one. Hanging all of your instruments on the wall also makes it easier to switch between instruments while you are playing.

Designing a music room: Keeping your instruments safe

When designing your music room, take some precautions to make sure your musical instruments are displayed safely and securely. This is especially important for stringed instruments like guitars or violins because they can easily be knocked off a stand or from a wall display. Select a location that is somewhat out of the way and will not be in the path of visitors into your music room. Secure your instrument in place on the display by stretching a rubber band across the hooks or each stand.

Designing a music room: Seating and logistics

Once you have your musical instrument display set up, it is time to think about the logistics of having spectators or other musicians visit your music room. Arrange a few chairs or a couch to provide a comfortable seating area for your guests. If you and your friends play electric instruments, purchase several extension cords or power strips to make sure there are enough available outlets if you decide to jam together in your newly designed music room.
