The truth of the matter is that the best diet for you is actually a diet that you customize yourself, based on your own preferences and personal tastes. There are many factors which go into your diet, including vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, and the like, but the most simple explanation of what causes you to lose weight is that you're consuming less calories than you're taking in. So to lose weight, you need to create a calorie deficiency in the way that works best for you.
For some people, this may mean changing the foods you eat. For others, it may mean exercising more. For most people, it will mean a combination of many factors. However, the easiest thing to do is to make many small changes. This way, your plan will be easy to stick to, and give you results.
When you undertake a typical "diet fad," you are generally making a few drastic changes in the way you approach food. The reason this is unrealistic and unsuccessful for most people is that they cannot maintain the drastic change, and they eventually give up and go back to the way they were eating before. Or, on the other hand, they do experience some success, then revert to their old habits, and gain back the weight they lost.
By making consistent small changes that you can live with, you can lose weight and keep it off. For example, cutting out only 100 calories per day from your diet would allow you to lose ten pounds in a year. This is a simple change to make, it would mean doing something as simple as drinking one less soda per day or having one less snack. If you can make several changes, you will see an even greater change over time.
Some general tips which can help you to design a lifestyle change which will benefit you include the following:
Eat smaller portions
Eat less junk food and more fruits and vegetables
Eat whole gains when possible (they will fill you up and they are more nutritious for you)
Eat less sugar
Eat lean proteins (they also fill you up)
Be more active throughout the day. This can be as simple as taking more small walks or taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
With these suggestions, you can begin designing your own personal approach to losing weight. You can soon be on your way to a healthier you.
