Designing Women Star, Dixie Carter Dies Saturday, April 10 at the Age of 70

It was with great sadness that the announcement of the death of Dixie Carter on Saturday, April 10. The former co-star of CBS comedy Designing Women was seventy-years-old. A cause of death has not yet been released.

Dixie Carter Played Julia Sugarbaker on Designing Women

The popular comedy series Designing Women aired on CBS from 1986 through 1993. Carter co-starred along with Annie Potts, Delta Burke and Jean Smart, as Julia Sugarbaker, a witty and charming southern belle. The CBS sitcom enjoyed much success and critical acclaim, though during the end of its run the show was plagued with rumors of a fall out between the four female leads.

Dixie Carter's Career After Designing Women

Designing Women may have been the highlight of Carter's show biz career, but it was not the end all be all of her career. Following Designing Women, Dixie Carter went on to have a recurring guest role on the television series, Family Law. Carter also won a 2007 Emmy for her guest appearance in popular ABC drama, Desperate Housewives.

What have Designing Women Co-Stars: Delta Burke, Jean Smart and Annie Potts Done since Designing Women?

Jean Smart's most recent role was as the overbearing mother of Samantha in the sitcom Samantha Who? Smart played opposite Christina Applegate. Annie Potts, who played Mary Jo Shively on Designing Women, recently joined the Tony Award winning Broad Way cast of God of Carnage in November of 2009. This was Pott's Broadway debut. Delta Burke, the most famous of the Designing Women co-stars has appeared on Broadway in the acclaimed musical, Thoroughly Modern Mille She also appeared in the legal drama, Boston Legal for five episodes during the show's third season playing Bella Horowitz, the love interest of Denny Crane (played by William Shattner).

The loss of acclaimed television actress, Dixie Carter on April 10, 2010 will be felt by many in Hollywood and across the nation. CBS's Designing Women was an example of television at its finest and Dixie Carter's role, as Julia Sugarbaker will be remembered.
