Desmopressin: Medication for Bedwetting (primary Nocturnal Enuresis) for the Older Child, Ages 6 - 10
When Nothing Else Works it May Be Time to Try Medication for Bedwetting for Your 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 Year Old
When you start running out of options and the whole family is getting short on sleep, it may be time to consider Desmopressin a medication for bedwetting, Desmopressin is a medication that can help 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10+ year olds stop bedwetting.
For the older child, ages 6, 7, 8, 9, 10+, bedwetting becomes more than a small inconvenience. To begin with, older children produce significantly more urine than a toddler or baby rendering pull-ups often inadequate and clean-up a lengthy chore.
Desmopressin helps stop bedwetting from the very 1st dosage, generally 2-3 very small pills. This bedwetting medication replaces the hormones that are needed to tell the kidneys to reduce nocturnal urine output.
For my son, Desmopressin has been the perfect medication to stop bedwetting. Staying dry at night equates to a good night's sleep. My son is able to feel confident at sleepovers and no longer has to wake up wet, cold and uncomfortable with pull-ups.
Desmopressin is a prescription medication for bedwetting and requires a Doctor's visit and prescription. Bedwetting stops, or is significantly decreased with the 1st or 2nd dosage, so you will know right away if this medication will help stop your older child's bedwetting troubles.
Since Desmopressin is a prescription for bedwetting, not a cure, this is a temporary solution while your child outgrows bedwetting. Once your older child stops taking Desmopressin the bedwetting often returns. For the best rate of long term success, also use behavioral training in conjunction with Desmopressin to cure bedwetting permanently.
Desmopressin is a medication and there are possible side effects to discuss with the doctor: stomach ache, nausea, headache, small increase in blood pressure and a very rare possible side effect is severe water retention. As with all medication, talk to your doctor about side effects, usage, allergies and drug interactions.
From personal experience, my son has had no ill side effects, sleeps well at night, and stays dry. He is able to be well rested and cheerful the next day. No more midnight baths and bed-changes, and bedwetting is no longer something my older child has to be embarrassed about.
