I had started watching "Desperate Housewives" when it premiered. I haven't watched the last two seasons of the show because I lost interest in it. For me, it is no surprise the show is ending this season.
How many men can one woman sleep with? Apparently, every one of them in the neighborhood plus a few.
How many men can any of them kill? As many as it takes to keep their dirty little secrets.
How many affairs can the men have? Just as many as the women just to keep up with the Joneses.
That doesn't include the meddling mothers, mother-in-laws, the drunken old women in the neighborhood who are far too nosey for their own good, the blackmailing, arson, drug addictions, teens out of control, pregnancies, lying, stealing, suicides, and cat fights. Oh did I mention, coming back from the dead? Yes, they had that too.
In eight seasons, "Desperate Housewives" has in short done everything daytime soap operas have done in 50 years. Anyone who watches those knows those have been finding themselves kicked to the curbs to make room for more talk shows, cooking shows, and game shows.
The only difference in prime time viewing is the take over of reality shows. There still are a few night time talk shows, game shows, comedies, and cartoons, but people are leaning more towards reality shows because they like watching a train wreck waiting to happen.
"Desperate Housewives" have found themselves in the same boat as many of their predecessors on prime time TV. Even though "Dallas" is returning, will it make the cut the second time around? Maybe; maybe not.
Then there is the crime shows that keep cropping up each season. Some make it; others don't. True crime is another realm people like to watch. Sure Housewives had all that, just not in the sense viewers are beginning to steer towards. Housewives is too much like real life rather than the fantasy world everyone, including men, want to escape to.
Like all good things, "Desperate Housewives" must come to an end on Wisteria Lane.
