'Desperate Housewives:' Guest Stars Galore, Revenge, Kidney Transplants and Doll Devotion

Connie Wilson
Sun., Jan. 9, 2011, 9 ET: "Desperate Housewives" continued its inane plot line regarding the punishment of Tom Scavo (Doug Savant) by wife Lynette (Felicity Huffman) for a youthful indiscretion with Vanessa William's Renee, which took place 20 years prior during college. Renee clues Tom in to why a variety of "accidents" have been happening to him, lately, everything from his pants splitting when he bends over to pick up his keys (Lynette took the seam in on the pants) to falling down the stairs because Lynette has put peanut butter on the stairs. By program's end, following Tom's line, "It would be a shame if some meaningless encounter 20 years ago ruined this beautiful life we have built for ourselves" the pair hold hands and all seems to be forgiven.

Bree VanDeKamp

Bree VanDeKamp (Hodge) is recruited by her minister to intercede with Beth, Paul's wife, using a clever bit of back-and-forth scripture reciting, which ends with "Pew 5, Seat 7, Bree VanDeKamp is shacking up with her boyfriend." Bree invites Beth to a meeting of all her female friends on the street. While in Bree's house, Beth discovers a gun under a pillow on the couch. The gun is the same make and caliber as the one that shot Paul Young (Mark Moses), her hospitalized husband.

Susan Delfino

Susan's mother Sophie, played by Leslie Ann Down, and her Aunt, played by Valerie Harper, come to visit Susan in the hospital. Susan's daughter Julie has been offering to donate a kidney. Susan is rejecting her daughter's offer, but she is hurt when her mother Sophie does not make the offer. There is only a 15% chance that her mother would be a match. The question can legitimately be asked, "Why doesn't her Aunt (Valerie Harper) volunteer?" Only later in the program do we learn that Sophie has just been diagnosed with breast cancer and is about to start radiation.

Gabrielle Solis

Gabrielle's daughters tear the arm off her doll, Princess Valerie, which is a surrogate for Gabrielle's missing daughter. After speaking sternly to her daughters about the need to be more careful with the doll that is, in reality, Gabrielle's doll, she takes the doll back to the store to have it repaired and has a soul-searching conversation with the owner of the doll store.
