Destination Guide: Puerto Rico Historical Attractions

Some of the Free Attractions Are More Popular Than Those that You Have to Pay For

They say the best things in life are free. Well, they are wrong. The best things in life usually cost something, monetary or otherwise. In Puerto Rico, it is no different. There are some excellent attractions that leave guests wanting more, and they do not cost an arm and a leg. In Puerto Rico, you are sure to have a good time if you love the beach, but there are some things that might appeal to the non-beach goer. Whether it involves history, culture, or a unique combination of the two, Puerto Rico is a playground for those who enjoy versatility in their tourist destination.

To find this coveted culture, one has to look no further than the capital city of San Juan. Specifically, housed within the capital city of this island is the area known as Old San Juan. As the name might indicate, there is much history to be seen here. Designated as a national historic site by the United States' Government in the 1950s, this area is full of great historical significance. It was once completely enclosed by a wall and inside, you will find much to do. In addition to the old buildings, there are actually restaurants, bars, and places to socialize.

The Historic District of Ponce is another place that is full of the history to which many love so much. A lot like Old San Juan in that it is a national historic site, it is always ready to display the old architecture that is very cool. Recently, this area underwent a major refurbishment, so those looking to visit there will find some very nice areas.

The city of San German has been around for almost five hundred years. Fitting with a city that is so old, it contains a lot of things that were around back in the navigational time when all of the sailors were making their way through the West Indies. It is Puerto Rico's second oldest city (behind San Juan) and is home to many different types of traditional architecture. Here, you will find plazas and old buildings that are unlike anything available in the United States. The area is not infested by tourists, so it retains a quaintness generally only found in the outlying areas of Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico has many attractions for the history lover and the fan of culture. Be sure to visit the fabulous beaches, but do not forget to look at some of the old stuff, too. It might sound boring, but it is a lot of fun for the entire family.
