Destination Guide: Travel to the Bahamas

The Bahamas Are Still the Best Thing Going in Vacations

William DuBose
Sure, it may be very 1990s to take a vacation to The Bahamas, but there must be some reason why people keep going back for more and more, right? The Bahamas are the original tourist destination in the Caribbean and because of this, they have more experience than anyone in showing people a good time. With over 700 islands and almost 2,000 cays, The Bahamas are somewhat spread out, but they seem cozy enough for most travelers to enjoy. The country features many great beaches and excellent opportunities for those who love water sports. The country is also high on nightlife and culture so there should be no shortage of things to do to keep you entertained.

Nassau is the most well known city on the islands. As the center of tourism for the entire nation, it serves as the primary bastion of hospitality for those who seek to travel to The Bahamas. Although it sits not far from the mainland of the United States, it has managed to retain a mostly British feel that makes it special. Sure, you will find some fast-food establishments and some American influence in the entertainment choices of the islands, the culture remains very British.

The Bahamas greatly expanded their tourism capabilities when they privatized the tourism market. Companies like Atlantis have come in and changed the way the islands do business. Large resorts draw people in with great deals and the travelers always seem to have a good time. If you come to The Bahamas, be sure to stay in one of the fancy resorts like The Atlantis that offers all inclusive deals on food, lodging, and drink specials.

It is generally best to travel to The Bahamas in the summer, but many travelers have embraced the great prices that are available in times that are not "peak seasons". During the Bohemian winter, the weather is still mild enough to make for an enjoyable experience. Just make sure you avoid the island during the crest of hurricane season, when the storms can come through at just about any time and ruin an expensive and well-meaning vacation.

If you only see one place in The Bahamas, go to Bimini. Made famous by Earnest Hemingway in his novels, this place oozes history from its pores. The no holds barred lifestyle that was pervasive in Bimini during those days still exists to some extent. This area also has some of the best fishing in all of the Caribbean, especially for sharks.

The Bahamas keeps people coming back for more and more each and every year. Come find out why folks love it so. With the great hotel deals, the beautiful beaches, and the fun-loving culture, you will see why this group of islands is second to none.
