Destination Guide: Travel to Dominica

The Island is a Sleep Getaway

William DuBose
If you are looking for great gambling in well lit casinos, then this island is not the place for you. If you want to stay in a multi-million dollar resort with all of the amenities that modern travelers demand, then head somewhere else and spend your dollars elsewhere in the Caribbean. But if you love the outdoors and beautiful settings, then this might be your place. For those who like rock climbing and other ventures, Dominica is like a second heaven. On the tiny and most undeveloped island of Dominica, you will find what is lost in the now developed Caribbean nations. You will see lush and lavish wildlife in an undiluted setting. Getting here is not the easiest, but once you make it to the island, you will not be disappointed.

While the beaches leave a lot to be desired as far as laying out and lounging around goes, they do offer some opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving. Most of the nation's beaches are extremely rocky and many are inaccessible to visitors. Most of them feature volcanic sand that is really not good for anything. You will find that these beaches are excellent for scuba diving, which is becoming more popular on the island. The waters around the island are a turquoise color that brings people back for more. Picard Beach on the northern most part of the island is the most ideal for the ventures of snorkeling or even windsurfing. It is accessible to travelers and there, you can find some nice places to eat at the surrounding hotels. This is the most popular spot in the country for travelers.

Much of Dominica is still untamed and as such, there are many opportunities for hiking and backpacking in some of the Caribbean's neatest cultural spots. The Morne Trois Pittons National Park features almost 17,000 acres worth of attractions that you will not find anywhere else in the world. For the serious backpacker, this is a must see spot on the island of Dominica.

While the island of Dominica may not be the lavish tourist playground that the rest of the Caribbean is, it does retain many of its original characteristics that many travelers may find fascinating. The country has some cool things to do that do not cost a lot of money. If you are into the fun ventures of backpacking, scuba diving, snorkeling, or whale watching, then you are sure to have a good time in the untamed paradise of Dominica.
