Destination Guide: Virgin Islands Golf

The Golf on the Islands is Very Underrated

William DuBose
The Virgin Islands are full of great places to shop, eat, and stay in luxury. Most travelers rave about the beauty of their beaches. There is one aspect to the Virgin Islands experience that goes vastly underrated, though. The golf courses there are second to none and they are accessible for a very small amount of money. Here, you will find those island courses that wow you with their beauty and drive you nuts every time the wind blows hard enough to influence the shot.

Mahogany Run in beautiful St. Thomas is one of the most world renowned courses in the Virgin Islands. This par-70 course is difficult enough to challenge you, but it does allow for novice golfers to have some success. The view here are what makes it great. From a majority of the holes, you can see deep into the British Virgin Islands and also get good views of the ocean. The staple section of this course is the segment of holes known as "Devil's Run". Holes 13, 14, and 15 are some of the most challenging in the Caribbean and double as some of the most beautiful as well.

Carambola in St. Croix is that island's top golfing attraction. This course has long been known as Fountain Valley to most visitors. People keep coming back year after year because the management at Carambola of St. Croix take pride in their course. They maintain it with the highest of standards and it shows with smooth running greens and fairways that are in excellent shape. On this course, you will have to fight off a number of tricky and beautiful water hazards that are never too far away from your ball. The course is short and beautiful and is one of the Virgin Islands' best bets.

The Buccaneer in St. Croix is another popular course. While some visitors say that it lacks the course upkeep of Carambola, it certainly makes up for that with its beautiful views and breathtaking vistas. The third hole here is the signature one and it stretches all the way from Christansted to the wonderful Buck Island.

The golf in the Virgin Islands is something that continues to fly under the radar. The courses are well kept and since it is not all that popular of an attraction, the prices remain doable. If you are into golf, this is a great way to spend one of the days of your vacation; taking in the best views in the Caribbean and firing some low scores!
