Determining a Budget When Buying an Engagement Ring

Buying an engagement ring can be one of the biggest steps in a man's life. Tons of questions will go through a man's head before he actually purchases an engagement ring for his girlfriend. Will she like the engagement ring? How much will it cost? Will she say yes to the engagement? Will the engagement ring last forever? Those are just some of the many questions that a man may ask himself before he buys an engagement ring.

An engagement ring is a symbol of your desire to marry a woman. Men give woman an engagement ring as a symbol of a commitment for marriage. Even though an engagement ring is not a must-have to be engaged it has become more and more popular to buy an engagement ring for a woman before you ask her to marry you. There are several things that men should know before they buy an engagement ring and the most important thing is what is their budget for an engagement ring.

Before a man even looks at one engagement ring, he should determine how much money he has to spend on the ring and what exactly his budet is. Many times if man goes to a jewelry store and doesn't have a set budget, he can end up spending twice as much money as he has. Jewelry store sales people work on a commission so they can be quite cunning when it comes to selling an engagement ring to a man. Most men really are not that familiar with diamonds and settings for engagement rings and will just listen to what the sales person has to say. Not all jewelry stores are like this, but there are quite a few who will not even pay attention to your budget and will just show the man the most expensive engagement rings that they have and will just go on and on about how great the ring is. This is why a man needs a set budget before he even steps one foot into a jewelry store to look at an engagement ring.

Some people claim that a man should spend at least 3 months salary on an engagement ring, but that is not a set standard. You need to spend what you have at the time. It's a good idea to save up money for an engagement ring for several months before you even go look at a ring. This way you can at least have a pretty decent down payment for the engagement ring or be able to pay the engagement ring off in full at the time of the purchase. Even if you only set aside $200 a month for 4 months, you can still at least have $800 for a down payment which is better than financing the whole ring. This will help you to better afford the ring and stay within your budget.

To determine how much you can finance and afford as a monthly payment for an engagement ring (if you have to do it this way) is to make a budget for your monthly expenses that you have now. Add up all your bills and utilities that you have every month and then subtract them from what your monthly pay is. Determine how much of that left-over money every month that you are willing to put towards an engagement ring. Remember, once you get engaged you will most likely need to save money for your wedding also, so you may not want a monthly payment that takes all your money. Once you have these numbers in mind, and your budget set. then visit some jewelry stores to get an idea of what you can afford. See what the interest rates are for the monthly payments at the different jewelry stores.

Lastly, remember to stick to the budget that you set when you purchase the engagement ring. Who wants to be still paying on an engagement ring after they are actually married just because they couldn't stick to a budget?

We bought each other our wedding rings. I bought his and he bought mine. We spent no more than $300 each and I think mine was cheeper than his. I'd just rather spend money on other things. The engagement ring was cheaper because I told him that I would rather spend more money on the wedding ring and I would rather travel. Goood tips, great article.
