Detox Diet for the U.S. Economy: Economic Recession

A Good Cleansing

Beverly Bright
The U.S. economy is going through an economic recession. It is a good detox cleansing diet for this country and a recession (a good economic cleansing) is good. On an average of every 10 to 12 years the economy goes through a re-adjustment period. During a recession, a reassessment of values is taking place. The rich are less rich (few bewail that fact), the middle class will learn to work smarter, not harder and the poor are no poorer than they were a year ago. Consumer goods will decrease in cost. Four ways an economic recession can be helpful:

A recession can be a detox diet for the environment:

Of the billions of tons of landfill produced by the world each year, 25% of it comes from the United States. An economic downturn with less spending and less consumption creates less packaging, less shipping, less material needed and ultimately less waste dumped in landfills. Less waste is good for the environment.

A recession can be a detox diet for some businesses:

New car and truck sales will diminish and older, reliable, and fuel efficient substitutes will be purchased. The used car industry will see a rosy picture with less competition in a recession. With a steady supply of fleet cars available consumers will have more choices and prices should be cheaper.

It may not be a good time to start a new bank, but an economic recession feeds entrepreneurial spirits. Problems create opportunities. Service businesses will see a rise in "start ups". One advantage of starting a business in economic hard times is less competition, and if you are successful in hard times, then you should thrive in good times. Making a business that offers something needed and making it stand out from others will insure good business in tough times and increase customers in good times. The margin for error is narrow in economic downturns and each individual should assess their business ideas carefully.

The Internet is a "wide open market" for entrepreneurs in an economic downturn!

A recession can be a detox diet for illegal immigration:

An economic recession can do more good for illegal immigration than a border fence. The Census Bureau officials have reported a decline of illegal immigration since 2007 and it is a good bet those numbers are even less in 2008. With the decline in the housing industry, where many illegals seek employment, the raids on low-skilled workplace manufacturing and tougher state laws, the illegal immigrants are finding it more difficult to stay in the United States. An unemployment rate of 6.1% or higher, loss of hundreds, if not thousands of jobs, loss of savings and retirement monies will tell would-be economic refugees, "Stay home!"

Conclusion:

The American consumer has been on a spending binge along with our Washington elected officials. Although there is plenty of blame to go around, there is something we can all do about the current economic recession. Reassess values and gain a better basis of living. Washington will follow our lead. "Needs" will become forefront and "wants" will diminish....that is a good thing. The United States of America is the greatest country on earth. Believe in the people. Have faith in God to see us through the current times, and the future.
