Restaurant Review: The Detroit Beer Company
Neighborhood: Downtown
Detroit, MI 48201
United States of America
At first glance, you might think that the Detroit Beer Company is simply a place you can find a good micro brew beer but look a little closer and you may be surprised to find some of the best food in the Downtown area.

It is easy to locate the Detroit Beer Co. once you find Broadway, the oval shaped, vintage looking sign hangs from the restaurant and stands out among the other businesses across from the Detroit Opera House. Once inside the building, you may also think it is a small but the restaurant also has seating on its upper floor. The restaurants atmosphere is casual but it is not uncommon to see diners dressed in suit and tie sitting along side diners wearing Hockey, baseball or football jerseys. With the Opera House being located directly across the street and only a block away from Comerica Park and Ford Field the restaurant definitely serves a diverse clientele. The tin ceiling and exposed pipes along with the hardwood floors give the restaurant a warehouse feel and, behind the bar, you can't help but notice the giant micro brewers.

First time diners are usually surprised to find the large variety of choices on the restaurants menu, since it is a well known place for beer, it has been overlooked as a place to find a good meal before or after a game or show. The menu offers 13 appetizers, 3 soups and 6 salads along with 17 different entrees, 4 Brick Oven baked pizzas, a dozen sandwiches and your choice of 5 desserts.

The Brick Oven Pizzas ($9.50) are considered personal size, but can really feed two people. If you like California Pizza Kitchen pizza, you will love the Detroit Beer Co.'s pizza, the Thai Chicken pizza is twice as good as the Pizza Kitchen's version. A tasty Spicy Thai sauce, mozzarella cheese, chicken, onions, carrots, bean sprouts and peanuts make this choice a low calorie favorite of mine. The restaurant's menu also offers Pepperoni, BBQ Chicken and Vegetarian pizzas.

Beer Battered Fish-N-Chips ($8.95 dinner/$7.50 lunch portion) are another great choice from the Beer Co.'s menu. Fresh Atlantic cod in their house brewed beer batter and is served with french fries and tartar sauce. Other entree choices include, but are not limited to: Wild mushroom pasta ($11.50), Cheese Tortellini ($8.95), BBQ St. Louis Ribs (11.95 half/$17.95 full slab), Blackened Catfish ($9.95) and Bailey's Pork Chops ($13.95).

If you are simply looking for a snack and a great beer, you can try one of the Detroit Beer Co.'s appetizers. The ultimate Beer Co. Bistro Chips ($7.50) are different from anything I've seen on any other restaurant menu. As one diner said, "The chips here are the BOMB!". These Bistro chips are flash fried, topped with crumbled blue cheese, smothered in beer cheese sauce and finished with scallions and, if that isn't enough, for an additional $1.50 they will load it with bacon.

Whether you are visiting the Detroit Beer Co. for a snack or full meal, save room for dessert. Try their specialty Deep Fried Twinkies ($4.95), yep, I said Deep Fried Twinkies. 2 Hostess Twinkies, tempura battered and deep fried. Served with assorted sauces and dusted with powdered sugar.

You won't be disappointed by choosing to have a meal at the Detroit Beer Co. The food, drinks and atmosphere are great and service is fast and friendly.
