Detroit Lions, Matthew Stafford Amazing in Week Two

The Detroit Lions, led by quarterback Matthew Stafford, are playing some very spirited football this season. After a nice week one victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions hosted the Kansas City Chiefs in week two. The game was anything but close, as Stafford hit his targets any time he wanted, and the Lions continued to fill up the stat sheet.

This Lions win was the most impressive game that fans have seen in quite some time from the franchise. The team was very clean on both sides of the ball, and in addition to the heroics from Stafford, the defense really came to play on Sunday. Chris Houston and Amari Spievey both had interceptions, with Houston posting his second straight game with a pick. The pair made things very difficult for Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel, but they do have to thank a nice performance by the defensive line as well.

Early sacks by Ndamukong Suh and Kyle Vanden Bosch really showed the force that this team has on the line, and that doesn't even bring into account how well that Justin Durant was playing. There were some experts that felt this could be an interesting defense fielded in Detroit, and now the fans are seeing firsthand what a force that it might actually be in 2011.

Starting out the season 2-0 is definitely something that Detroit has to be proud of so far. This is a team just a few seasons removed from winning zero games, and now the Lions could actually be contending for a playoff spot this year. It might be tough to win the NFC North this season, especially with pretty good Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers teams playing in the same division. A realistic scenario would have Detroit competing for one of the two NFC Wild Card slots, and sneaking into the postseason for the first time in years.

Even though Stafford has had a few nice games under his belt already, this seems to have been his best performance since joining the NFL. It wasn't exactly perfect, as he did throw an interception during the game, and there were also a few errant passes, but for a young quarterback, this performance was gold. If he can have more games where he throws around 300 yards and has four or more touchdowns, Lions fans are going to have to worry more about finding available tickets than whether a game will be blacked out.
