Detroit Lions NFL Draft Team Needs
Here are the most concerning positions for the Lions.
Urgent Team Needs: Offensive line, defensive line, linebacker
Narrowing the team needs down to three positions was tough but the Lions need more meat and substance up front. They need to be able to run the ball and stop the run.
Left tackle features Jeff Backus who is a decent player but a big-time left tackle prospect would make a world of difference. Offensive line is the top need. A big, powerful guard would be a huge plus in the middle rounds as well.
Linebacker is the second-biggest need. Ernie Sims can flourish if protected by bigger linemen and linebackers and allowed to roam but he has no help. A versatile run-stuffer is needed badly.
Defensive tackle is a surefire need but defensive end is bigger. The Lions might run a 3-4 under new coach Jim Schwartz but it's not known for sure as he said he would evaluate the personnel before deciding. If they go to a 3-4, d-line is a lesser need. DE Cliff Avril can be a good pass-rushing OLB.
(Relatively) Secondary Draft Needs: Cornerback, quarterback, wide receiver
The Lions' DB's are mostly too old and slow and/or too "pedestrian" to make any plays. A playmaker/ballhawk is neeeded at any DB position who can make the rest of the unit better.
At QB, the Lions have some stopgap options but no difference-maker.
Wide receiver is actually a need despite the many runs on top pick WR's Matt Millen made, as sad as that is. A good possession guy to go along with Calvin Johnson and a fast slot guy are needed.
Luxury in the NFL Draft: Another running back. Kevin Smith is the real deal and Rudi Johnson could return. A speedy third-down back would be a nice bonus.
