The celebration in Detroit will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 6, according to Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. TV coverage by Detroit station Local 4 will begin at 9 AM, while the website ClickOnDetroit.com will allow those who can't attend to watch the parade via the Internet.
The parade will begin at the Hockey Town Café on Woodward Avenue, proceeding down Detroit until the players reach Hart Plaza at the Detroit Riverfront. The Red Wings players will ride brand new floats accompanied by marching bands, all within views of the mobs of Red Wings fans. The Michigan Department of Transportation reassured Red Wings fans that there should be smooth access to downtown Detroit. Construction projects in the area should only be a limited problem for people getting into the city.
When the parade ends at Hart Plaza, Mayor Kilpatrick will address the team under invitation from Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch. It will be a warm day for a parade as temperatures will be in the 80's but feel like the 90's, with thunderstorms not expected to arrive until evening. There will be no charge for Detroit fans to attend this latest Stanley Cup parade.
