At Jon Jon's Tavern, a topless bar in the Detroit suburb of Warren, general manager Kelly Sander says that "business is down 50 percent from a year ago." This is in spite of lowering drink prices and cutting back on hours. "People can't afford to go out and have fun the way they used to," she said. "Everybody's in a pinch. I've got to make some cuts." Nearby, at the club known as The Booby Trap, similar circumstances were noted by its manager.
Hence, a rhetorical question for cynics: Will Detroit's adult entertainment industry petition Congress for a bridge loan; in other words, do you anticipate a "strip club bailout?" After all, some would argue that the XXX industry is "too big to fail."
Note: This is not a mockery of the auto workers facing dire straits in Detroit. Just a nod to an interesting story.

Post a CommentI really thought this industry would boom in this kind of crisis... fascinating!
Amusing slant, but it only points up the impact of the problems in the auto industry.
No matter what the state of the economy, "booze and boobs" will never fail. Some clubs might see a decrease in foot traffic but other clubs won't see a dent in their profit margin.
Sorry Brook - that was me above. I didn't realize I hadn't logged in!
Hmmm ... interesting, to say the least. I just read in our local paper that spa business was not down at all, because people still like to pamper themselves. I guess I can be glad they at least say no to the strip joints?? :)
