Tigers - Top 5 Prospects

2010 fantasy baseball: Detroit Tigers - top 5 prospects. Includes the top 5 ranked fantasy baseball prospects for the Detroit Tigers entering the 2010 season.

#1 - Austin Jackson - OF
#2 - Scott Sizemore - 2B
#3 - Alex Avila - C
#4 - Casey Crosby - SP
#5 - Casper Wells - OF
#6 - Ryan Strieby - 1B/OF

#1 - Austin Jackson - OF - Age: 23
As one of the top overall minor league prospects in all of baseball entering the 2010 season, Jackson will be given the opportunity to play everyday as the starting centerfielder in the Tigers lineup during the 2010 season. As the centerfielder of the future for the Tigers, Jackson is a solid all around hitter who makes solid contact and has excellent speed. As a top of the batting order type of hitter, Jackson could very easily tally 25 stolen bases for the Tigers during the 2010 season if he can receive 500 at bats. If Jackson is sent to Triple A to begin the 2010 season, then a June call up is very likely, and he could potentially make an Andrew McCutchen or Dexter Fowler type of impact as a rookie during the 2010 season for fantasy baseball teams.

#2 - Scott Sizemore - 2B - Age: 25
With Placido Polanco departing as a free agent, the Tigers will call upon seasoned minor league rookie Scott Sizemore to be the everyday starting second baseman during the 2010 season. Considered to be one of the Tigers top minor league prospects, and obvious 2B of the future, Sizemore offers an above average combination of power and speed for a second baseman, which should allow him to contribute immediately to the Tigers offensive lineup to begin the 2010 season. During the 2009 season, Sizemore tallied 17 homeruns and 21 stolen bases with a .308 batting average over 520 at bats in the minors last year. If he can claim the #2 spot in the Tigers batting order, Sizemore could easily be looking at similar numbers during his rookie year in 2010.

#3 - Alex Avila - C - Age: 23
After an extremely successful debut in the majors during the 2009 season, Avila could very easily overtake Gerald Laird as the everyday starting catcher for the Tigers at some point during the 2010 season. Following an early August call-up last season, Avila promptly went on to tally 5 homeruns, 14 rbi, 10 walks and a .279 batting average over just 61 at bats. At age 23, Avila is extremely young and there is no guarantee that the Tigers want to press him into action this early in his career, but with the starting catcher job his for the taking to begin the 2010 season, Avila offers enough power to post 10-15 homeruns for the Tigers and fantasy baseball teams during the 2010 season.

#4 - Casey Crosby - SP - Age: 21
Crosby is likely the toughest Tigers minor league prospect to rank in fantasy baseball terms entering the 2010 season. After undergoing Tommy John surgery and taking a full year off to recover, Crosby returned to the minor league scene in 2009 and pitched outstanding while also proving to be durable as he pitched the entire season. However Crosby's playing time only came at Single A during the 2009 season, so expecting a leap to the major leagues in 2010 may be somewhat unrealistic. Yet even at that, if Crosby starts the 2010 season in the minors pitching well and the Tigers need help in their rotation, a call up could definitely be in store.

#5 - Casper Wells - OF - Age: 25
Already 25 years old, Wells has progressively gotten better and better over his three years in the minors. If this progression continues, Wells could easily force his way into playing time in the Tigers outfield during the 2010 season, especially if Austin Jackson struggles or Magglio Ordonez were to get injured or move to DH. Offering 15-20 homerun and 10 stolen base potential over the course of a full season, Wells is one prospect who has been taking a back seat to more prominent named Detroit Tigers prospects.

#6 - Ryan Strieby - 1B/OF - Age: 24
Developing into one of the best power hitting players in the minors, Strieby is one of the most underrated prospects in all of baseball entering the 2010 season. The main reason for Strieby being underrated is that many scouts consider his swing a work in the progress, as he is a liability for producing a low batting average and falling victim to the strikeout way too much. However after posting a .300 batting average and nearly doubling his walk ratio during the 2009 season, Strieby could easily have turned a corner last season and now be well on his way to becoming a solid middle of the lineup hitter at the major league level sooner rather than later.
