Developing Efficient Typing Skills

Form is important in typing. If a typist's form is bad, then their productivity will be inefficient and slow. Most good typists use a method called touch typing. Using this method, typists position their hands in a specified manner and type without looking at the keyboard. To accomplish this, the typist memorizes the keyboard. Incidentally, keyboards have become standardized so as to cater to those who use the touch typing method. While there are groups who believe that the current keyboard is not engineered for maximum efficiency, the current standardized keyboard is considered by the majority to be the most efficient keyboard possible. Touch typists move their fingers in a consistent manner.

It is important to understand that every word that is either posted on-line or printed in books was typed. Keyboards have become standardized so that the plethora of typists can work to maximum efficiency. As such, one may argue that the vast amount of information available, both in books and on-line, can be attributed to the standardized keyboard.

Without using the touch typing method, one is forced to search for each letter one the keyboard. This is a method used by people who simply refuse to learn the touch typing method. Obviously, this is not an efficient method for typing. For those who type on a daily, or even weekly, basis, such a method is not acceptable. If a person uses a computer or is required to type more than once or twice every year, he or she should take the time to learn how to type by touch.

After learning to type by touch, it is still useful for a typist to learn how to type faster. For many this is accomplished through various means. The first of these means is correct posturing. It is important for a typist to sit upright. They must also make sure that their elbows are at their sides. Letting their fingers hang in the air above the keyboard or letting their fingers push the keys is counter-productive. Instead, the well postured typist lets their fingers relax on the keys and only pushes down when the key is to be pressed.

Another important aspect is the placement of the keyboard. Most desks ensure that the keyboard will be placed at the appropriate height. However, if the typist is taller or shorter than most, he or she should change the position of the keyboard accordingly. The efficient typist also makes certain to type in a consistent manner. He or she will also avoid exhaustion by taking breaks which will increase productivity.

Finally, the good typist is aware of how good they are and how much they need to improve. He or she will frequently test their typing skills for speed and accuracy.
