Leadership involves influencing people to cooperate, influencing people to reach a destination, influencing people to conquer their self-doubt. If one understands how to influence people, he will develop into a strong leader. A striking difference resides between forcing and influencing people to act a certain way. Influencing people corresponds to making others want to accomplish the task you request. Thus, knowing how to influence people is paramount to becoming a powerful leader.

Ironically, influencing people is easier than one might think. Learning how to influence people isn't hard, but it requires methods rarely used before. This article edifies how to influence people in any circumstance and illustrates how influencing people can be put into practice.

Offer a compliment. Compliments are a rarity in society. Many people refrain from giving praise to others. One way of instantly influencing people to act on your behalf is simply to furnish them with a genuine, specific compliment. Immediately, they will befriend and take an interest in you. In addition, you put them in a cheerful mood-knowing how to influence people produces minute results if you are influencing people who are upset or grouchy.

Let's apply what we've learned so far about influencing people and take the scenario you are influencing your son to do his homework. Rather than directly accusing him of having a messy room, saying something like "Mike, I am truly impressed with how well you did in soccer last week," will snap him in a proud mood. This subtle tactic works wonders when influencing people.

Identify why they would want to do it. When learning how to influence people, this is the most important tactic. If one does not find a reason why people would want to carry out a task, he will never succeed at influencing people. The art of influencing people revolves around making people want to do what one asks. If you tell Mike that you want him to do his homework, the odds of him obliging are minimal (you will never excel at influencing people if you focus on what you want). However, knowing what you know about influencing people, you could simply say, "Man, as long as you keep on top of your homework and don't let your grades slip, you will make the team without a doubt!" By applying this aspect of influencing people, you have created a reason why Mike would want to do his homework.

Challenge them. Although identifying their reason is essential, knowing how to influence people demands additional strategies. Another technique for influencing people is to challenge their ability. Everyone wants to develop an honorable reputation, so an easy way of influencing people is to simply stroke their ego but question their ability.

With Mike, you could say, "In fact, if you put the same ambition into your homework as you do soccer, I am sure you could be the top of your class!" By challenging Mike's ability to out-do his classmates, you may entice him to act and live up to the challenge. Providing appropriate challenges greatly enhances your ability of influencing people.

Make them think it's their idea. The final core element of how to influence people is by allowing them to influence themselves. People will always listen to themselves prior to someone else. Influencing people requires one to lead others to deriving their own ideas.

If you know how to influence people, you may tell Mike, "I know you can raise your grades up to get on the soccer team. How do you think you could do that?" Obviously, the correct answer would be to do his homework. After he comes up with the idea, all he needs is a little encouragement. This trick works well when influencing people because they don't even know they are being influenced!

The techniques of how to influence people are not complicated, just different. Influencing people requires much less telling and convincing than many people think. To be exceptional at influencing people, one must be able to praise them, identify their desire, challenge them, and guide them to come up with the idea themselves.

Once one learns how to influence people, he will be able to lead a team of different people with different ambitions towards a common goal, which, in essence, is the definition of leadership. Influencing people is a powerful tool on the belt of any leader. If you can learn how to influence people to work together despite their diversity, how to influence people to stride towards a shared objective, and how to influence people to surmount their fears, you will develop into a leader people will respect and follow.
