Developmentally Disabled Adults Share the Art That's Inside at Inside Out Studios in Hamilton, Ohio
Earning an Income from Their Art
Inside Out Studios is an initiative of the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Their Hamilton, Ohio location offers the same opportunities any other artist desires. They provide a supportive environment and instructions in techniques to help artistic talents blossom. They offer an atmosphere that fosters creativity and inspiration. They market the artists' work, which helps them earn an income from doing something they love. The income they earn provides a sense of self sufficiency and independence.
Community Partnerships
The Inside Out Studios thrive due to community partnerships. Abstract artist and Art Realization Technologies founder, Tim Lefens, was an Inside Out Studios partner in 2009. Funding from the Christopher & Dana Reve Foundation allowed Lefens to teach his innovative art techniques. A grant from the Ohio Arts Council funded resident artist, Debbie Board. She taught color, composition, texture and silk dying techniques. The artists also have ongoing working relationships with volunteers from Cincinnati Christian Schools and other creative partners.
Marketing collaborations with local art venues help get the word out about their work. Jolie Harris' Studio 501 at Pendleton Art Center has hosted an Inside Out Studios exhibit. Kona Bistro sponsored and hosted an art show/fund raiser. The proceeds benefited the Miami University chapter of Best Buddies. The artists also participate in local and regional art events.
Suzanne Fisher, Inside Out Artistic Partner
The Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council recently awarded Inside Out a grant to develop marketing materials, portfolios, biographies and exhibition venues. Artist, Suzanne Fisher, was chosen to head the project. She has established working relationships with her existing contacts within the regional arts community. She has also arranged exhibits and sales of the artist's work.
In addition to helping the Studio market their work, Suzanne has shared her mosaic and ceramic expertise with the artists and staff. During the fall of 2010, she introduced ceramic ornaments crafted by her Inside Out Students. Suzanne marketed their creations at local arts and craft shows and at Findlay Market in Cincinnati's Historic Over the Rhine neighborhood.
Online Gallery
The Inside Out Studios online gallery offers the artists thoughts on their creative process and a selection of their work. The site also has a schedule of upcoming events and exhibits.
