Darkness makes demands on me
It insists that I sleep
Smothers me in velvet black
Shushes me wordlessly
Can you see the shadows watching?
Night is a beast of many faces
flush with terrors hiding just beneath the bed
Streetlights making empty promises
Fearing I'll be swallowed up
and spat out next morning's headline

Great poem. Thanks for sharing. - Kent
reminds me last night, I couldn't sleep
You expressed the character's overpowering fear very well in just a few words. Well done.
I have not read your other poems (yet!) but this one is just so incredibly good. I'm an author and this is publishing quality of the best I have seen. Well done, no, better; brilliant.
I think this is your best yet for me Jillian. Great allegories
I enjoyed the dark atmospheric quality of the poem. Just laying down and falling asleep seemed terrifying to the subject of the poem.
