Devils in My Sleep

Melissa R. Mendelson
Fighting for sleep,
but the devils
won't let me be.
Under the covers,
they moan in my ear,
tear at my flesh,
and dig deep
into the darkness
behind my eyes.
I see them.
They crawl
over every corner,
pieces of me,
reaching for my heart.
Their ugly, twisted bodies
consume me,
bloody shadows
against the walls.
Entangled into each other,
they fall
against me
in one breath,
a mass
that forms
a lump
in my throat,
and I try to scream!
But they won,
and I am nothing,
falling
asleep.
